Getting More Iron in Your Diet


Most women struggle with having enough iron in our system due to monthly menstrual cycles. However, it's important that we get this vital mineral since it's what helps us create new blood cells and boost immunity. The body is usually very good at recycling the iron in our bodies so that the stores are not depleting; however, during menstrual cycles when blood is lost from the body iron is lost with it. That's one of the reasons why nurses check your iron levels before donating blood. It's to prevent you from becoming more iron deficiency by loss of blood.


In general, one of the best and well know sources of iron is meat, especially red meat. However, if you are trying to avoid red meat and decrease meat consumption in general, there are still great ways to up the iron in your diet. One of the best methods, is a green juice made from orange juice and a dark leafy green such as spinach or kale. The vitamin C in the orange juice actually makes the iron in the dark leafy green more bioavailable. This means your body can take the iron out of the food and use it easier.


While drinking spinach or kale might not seem very appealing, the orange juice masks the bitter taste quite well. Add in some other frozen fruits such as banana, mango, or peach to further enhance the flavor and nutrients. It honestly taste more like a fruit smoothie than vegetables, but the lush green color will make you feel like you're killing the health game!
