Diving Back into Fitness Series: Masks

In the previous blog, we discussed that COVID is spread through the air. Because of this, masks are a great way to prevent infection because it decrease the amount of viral particles released into the air.

There is one misconception that is important to discuss - masks do not prevent you from inhaling the viral particles; it prevents people from spreading it. To illustrate this point, there is a simple demonstration you can do at home to understand how this works. All you will need is a spray bottle with water or mirror cleaner, a mirror, and a mask. First, spray the spray bottle on the mirror and notice how much it mists up the mirror. This represents the droplets from a sneeze or a cough, possibly filled with COVID spreading through the air. Now do the same thing, except spray through the mask. Notice how the mask captured much of the droplets, preventing it from spreading through the air. This is how masks as a great preventative and why everyone should be wearing one when they are out in public. The more people who participate, the better the outcome!

While masks are extremely helpful, they can also be difficult to breathe through. To combat this, use a cloth mask when you are engaged in strenuous activity such as a steep hike or at the gym. While it does not prevent as many air droplets as high quality masks, it's still better than nothing.
